Our Debts
Now what do we owe God? you ask.
Suppose He sent a bill:
A hundred thousand dollars for
The sun upon the hill;
Two thousand for the merry brook
That runs along the way;
Five hundred for the starry night;
A thousand for the day;
Six hundred for the violets
Which tell us that it's spring;
And then another thousand for
The mocking birds that sing.
So starts the list which all of us
So easily forget.
If God should charge us what we owe,
We'd always be in debt.
The bounty of our Saviour's love,
Our money cannot buy;
And we cannot repay that love
From now until we die.
We cannot pay our debts to God,
In all their multitude,
So let us in our lives for HIm,
Express our gratitude.
